In order to reduce security risk to university accounts, the connection protocol known as IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) will be retired Monday, January 17, 2011.

How does this change affect you? You will be affected if any of these statements are true:

  • You are using a Blackberry mobile device configured by your wireless provider.
  • You are using an email program/client other than Microsoft Outlook or Entourage 2008.

What options are available if you are affected by this retirement? There are two ways to access university e-mail via Blackberry:

If you are not using Outlook or Entourage 2008 as your e-mail program, please contact the IT Help Desk to set up Microsoft Outlook or Entourage 2008 on your university computer.

Important Information for WCU Faculty & Staff

The university has enacted the mobile communication device (MCD) policy to comply with various contractual, regulatory and statutory obligations to protect certain types of data, such as those defined as protected information under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996), FERPA (Family Educational Right Privacy Act of 1974), PII (Personally Identifiable Information) and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).

Beginning November 1, 2010, faculty and staff wishing to have their email automatically “pushed” to their mobile communication devices to university e-mail must register their device. Instructions on registration and other pertinent information can be found at the mobile communications devices website.
