Computer Repair

The Division of IT performs computer repairs on all computers owned by the University and student owned computers.

Requirements/Limitations

  • Computer must be owned by a currently enrolled student.
  • Only two unique computers will be repaired by the Technology Commons per academic year.
  • Computers must meet or exceed the following list of minimum specifications to be checked in for service:

 

 Windows Based  Mac Based
 Processor 1GHz Pentium M or AMD equivalent (Laptop), or 2.5GHz Pentium 4 or AMD equivalent (Desktop) 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 iMac (desktop), or 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 MacBook G4 (laptop)
 Memory  2GB 2GB
 Operating System Windows 7 Professional or higher OS 10.6 “Snow Leopard” or higher

 

  • All computers must be picked up by the same person that dropped it off.  We will not check in a computer under someone else’s name.
  • A valid CatCard or legal form of picture identification (driver’s license, passport, military ID, etc) MUST be shown to pick up a computer.
  • All computers checked in for OS reinstallation MUST have a valid license of the operating system provided which must be provided in an official form such as a keycode sticker or original software packaging.
  • The Division of IT is not responsible for any loss of data during the process of diagnosis and repair.  Students are responsible for backing up their data before check in.
  • The Division of IT has the right to refuse service to a computer that has signs of physical abuse due to liability issues.

Bring the computer to the Student Technology Commons in the basement of the Hunter Library during service hours.

Charge for this Service

Charges will only be made if the computer requires hardware service.  All software repairs are free of cost.  If a hardware problem is discovered, the student will be alerted and asked permission to proceed before any repairs are attempted.  We accept CatCash only.  We cannot accept cash nor can we accept credit cards or checks.

Warranty work – No charge for hardware work on computers purchased through the Western Carolina Student and Personal Purchases Computing Program.  No hardware repairs will be attempted if the warranty is with a company we are not authorized to perform repairs on.  Currently we are authorized to repair Dell and Apple computers.

Dell computers purchased at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, http://www.dell.com/ or other venues will incur a charge of $50.00 for the warranty service.

Non-warranty work – Charges will be made for time and labor for repairs and cost of parts and shipping. Labor charges are $25 for an initial estimate, then $55 per hour.

Warranty Service and Repairs:  Apple or Dell computers purchased through Western Carolina Student and Personal Purchases Computing Program.
