The Curative Analysis team in IT is tasked with finding the causes of significant IT issues that affect campus. In this news update, we draw your attention to some of the problems being investigated or issues handled recently.

Upper Campus Network:  Bad fiber on upper campus in conjunction with inclement weather caused an interruption in network connectivity in December.  The fiber was replaced in December as work continues to prepare for the new upper campus residence hall.

Windows Computers:  An issue was discovered after a recent Windows Feature Update causing several computers running the Windows operating system to attempt to log in to the Azure AD domain instead of the WCU domain.  Clients can still log in to their computers by using wcu\ before the username (i.e. wcu\username) at which point a technician can unbind the computer from the Azure AD domain and rebind it to the correct WCU domain. IT staff worked with Microsoft to correct the issue during the scheduled Data Center outage in December.

Zoom:  Users who have a pre-existing Zoom account using their WCU email address are intermittently unable to login to Zoom using single-sign on (SSO). As a workaround, users can be directly invited through Zoom, and then SSO access works correctly after initial setup.  IT staff are working on a permanent resolution for this issue.

Multi-Factor Authentication Text Messages:  Several clients are reporting issues receiving text messages or failure of the authentication code when using text as the MFA authentication method. Clients can use their security questions or refresh the page to receive another text message as a workaround. Many times text messaging is outside of WCU’s control as it is provided by Microsoft and/or cell carriers (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, etc.) Text messaging may be especially unreliable in the mountains.  The Division of IT is working on a campaign to encourage the use of the Microsoft Authenticator app as an MFA authentication method.
